GV II
House with warehouse to rear. Early C17. Colour-washed cob on a rubblestone plinth, slate-hung to part of rear wall facing yard; gabled slate roof to rear range, slate roof to cross wing (mostly replaced in artificial slate), thatch to No.7A to the right; rubblestone stacks finished in brick. PLAN: 3 ranges built around a narrow courtyard. Front range of 2 units with rear lateral stack heating room to right of unheated room, probably built as a throughway providing access to rear yard. 2-unit cross wing to the left, heated by front gable-end stack. Former warehouse range parallel to rear has a C19 rear lateral stack. 2 storeys; 4-window range. C20 windows to the cross wing, mid C19 10/10-pane sashes to No.7A. The courtyard has C19 three-light casement windows to the rear warehouse and a C17 ovolo-mullioned 3-light window adjoining stack to the front room on right. INTERIOR: boxed beams to the right, stop-chamfered beams to the cross wing; the cobbled through-way, now covered over, has a chamfered lintel over a wide opening to the rear yard. To the first floor is a C18 2-panelled door. The roof of the front range is not accessible. The cross wing has a 4-bay roof (not accessible) with boxed principle rafters and purlins. The rear warehouse range, partially inspected, has C17/18 collar truss with ridge-in-notch apex. This is an interesting example of a C17 merchant's house with its own warehouse outbuilding.
