Lock-keeper's cottage. c.1800, altered. Brown brick in English garden wall bond, slate roof. Rectangular double-depth plan, plus small extension at right-hand corner. Basement and 2 storeys (on sloped site, 3 storeys at rear), a 3-window range; doorway to left of 3rd window, with altered door and painted lintel; windows with raised stone sills and altered glazing, those at ground floor segmental-headed; single-storey lean-to addition at right-hand end. Ridge chimney between 1st and 2nd windows, gable chimney to the right. Right-hand return wall has segmental-headed basement doorway beside lean-to; lower part of rear corner at this end is slightly chamfered and has stone quoin reinforcement against chafing of tow-ropes (tow-path passing round building from lock to bridge); rear has segmental-headed basement doorway near this corner, and 2 widely-spaced windows on each floor. Interior not inspected. Forms group with Lock No.[2] to east (q.v.) and Towpath Bridge over Islington Branch to west (q.v.).
