Town Hall. c1904. By HA Cheers. Builder WJ Bowers. Terracotta; brick; slate roof. Central staircase plan. Symmetrical 2 storeys; 7-window range: 3 central mullion and transom lights, flanked by 4-light windows and canted bays, all with leaded lights and moulded cases, sills and transoms; central pediment with crest, figures and oculus; ornate lanterns over bay-windows. Central doorway with rusticated pillars and round-headed arch, under prominent round-headed hood; rusticated round-headed openings to left and right, the latter giving access to rear. Three 2-storey mullioned tripartite windows with round heads; canted oriel windows under domed angle towers. Large central gable with civic crest and oculus; balustrading. Richly ornamented with banding, pilasters, finials, scrollwork, figures. Elaborate wooden lantern with columns, dome and flagpole. Ornamental iron gates with balcony and railings. To rear: Diocletian windows with civic crests. INTERIOR: rich. Empire staircase; marble columns to enriched plasterwork ceilings. The Council Chambers and Great Hall are of particular note. (Plaque in hall).
