GV II

House. 1913. By CA Clayton Greene. For Tindal Greene. Brick under grey-washed rough render with narrow brick dressings; roof of plain tiles with render and brick chimneys. Vernacular revival style. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 4 windows, the left in cross wing. Arched surround of narrow radiating bricks, some projecting like voussoirs and keystone, to door to right of centre which has long narrow central light and long narrow panels below corniced hood with delicate pendant fret decoration. All windows leaded casements with rendered plain reveals, except where render awaiting renewal, and projecting wood sills. Single windows above door and to left on first floor; 2-light windows on each floor to right of door and at right on first floor of projecting left wing under gable with swept feet and brick kneelers and stepped tumbling-in; wide window on ground floor, and 5-light first floor window in right return, of wing. Steeply pitched roof and similar lower cross wing roof have swept eaves; chimneys at right end, mid-slope behind cross gable, and on ridge of cross gable. Rear garden front has glazed door at right of centre and 2-light window to left of it, with wood balcony balustrade above to glazed door and narrow window; left full-height square bay projection with 5-light windows under pent roof; 5-, 4- and 2-light windows in right gabled wing with 2-light in return. INTERIOR: shows close-string dog-leg stair with stick balusters, high grip handrail, and square newels with ball finials on high swept feet; some doors 2-panelled, the intermediate rail placed high, some glazed with bars, all with architraves; chimney-pieces of historic type, one Tudor-arched stone surround with sturdy wood mantel on wide pilasters, others with tin-glazed tiles, cast-iron hour-glass or reeded back grates. Art Nouveau fittings in attic room. Arch-brackets to pegged beams in ground floor rooms, coved ceilings in first floor of cross wing. Some render removed at time of survey and awaiting replacement.
