Office. 1898-1905. By Arthur Blomfield-Jackson. Limestone ashlar, roof not visible. Double-depth plan. Edwardian Baroque style with Art Nouveau details. 3 storeys; 5-window range. Very elaborate and stylistically eclectic: wide doorways in lower outer 1-window sections, a carriage arch to a side passage on the left, with blocked eared architraves, console cornice and wide swan's neck pediment with a central cartouche, paterae to soffit and 2-leaf wrought-iron gates. C20 plate-glass shop windows separated by pilasters to raised cornices. First-floor windows have moulded cills, jambs with impost bands and spiral tops, and lintels with sinuous mouldings either side of the keys; outer windows have bracketed cornices and swept pediments with carved tympani. Middle 3 second-floor canted bay windows set back, with pilasters to the sides rising to an overhanging bracketed cornice: bays have attached columns to egg-and-dart capitals and gabled cornices with leaves and shields inside, and a panel through the pediments with carved leaves. Outer windows have consoles to overhanging lintels and cornices. Sashes with 9-pane/plate glass sashes, 5-pane to the outer windows. INTERIOR: largely remodelled c1985; rear dogleg winder stair with cast-iron splat balusters, fireplaces, panelled reveals and 5-panel doors. Designed to have a third-floor loggia with cupolas and a steep roof. (Mowl T: Bristol, The Last Age of the Merchant Princes: Bristol: 1991-: 74).
