GV II
Stable, now used as a store. Late C16, C17 and C18. Timber-framed on a low brick base and weatherboarded with peg-tiled roof, hipped with end gablets. At SW end the hip continues over small out-shut. Rectangular plan. Front NW elevation has an approximately central doorway with C20 boarded door and another doorway to the NE with lower part blocked and upper half door. INTERIOR has 2 late C16 central bays with C17 and C18 extensions at the 2 ends under the hips of the roof. The 2 central bays indicate the original size of the building as the outer tie-beams have mortices for the end wall studs and internal bracing and also rafter seating joints for roof hips. Set within these tie-beams are 2 rafter couples with added collars to receive the hip rafters. That to the SW is still in use but carries additional rafters to create a continuous hip and out-shut roof. The lengthening of the building at both ends has kept essentially the same roof shape. The framing of the 2 central bays has fairly wide studding, 0.69m (27") between centres. The principal posts are jowled and have rising internal curved arched bracing passing by the studs and not cut into them. The central roof truss is of the side purlin type with principal rafters reduced in thickness from the purlin to the apex. Heavy raking queen struts clasp the purlins in position and lengthwise stiffening is provided by elegantly curved wind-braces. The front walling has been considerably re-worked and breeze block infilling has been inserted into part of the rear wall. The principal framing and shape of the original building though survives, constructed by a technique not frequently found in East Anglia. A C20 lean-to shed on SE side and continuing from SW end is not included in the listing. The stable forms a group with Frieze Hall (qv).
