School. c1714 with C20 internal alterations. Coursed squared
limestone with ashlar dressings, rear wing brick with ashlar
dressings; stone slate roof with half-hip to left; external
stone stack to left side has ashlar top formed to imply pair
of flues with moulded tops, similar right-end and 2 rear axial
stacks, to rear left of 4 flues.
2 storeys and attic; 7-window range. First floor has seven
2-light stone mullion-and-transom windows with leaded lights
in flat unmoulded stone surrounds with projecting stone cills,
that to centre with moulded cornice over and segmental
pediment with painted inscription in tympanum: FRONT REPAIRED
IN/ (1853)/ BY THE HONBLE WM L BATHURST.
Ground floor has six similar windows without projecting cills;
6-panel door with upper 2 panels glazed in similar flat
surround with pulvinated frieze and pediment over. 7 dormers,
to centre gabled, other 6 hipped, with 2-light leaded
casements. Chamfered plinth; moulded band course over ground
floor; moulded timber eaves cornice. Moulded lead hopper-head
to centre right now with cast-iron down-pipe.
Left side has one C19 3/3-pane horned sash in heavy rusticated
surround with keyed lintel and stone cill to first floor;
ground floor has C20 plank door in similar surround to right,
3-light stone mullion-and-transom window with C19 iron
casements to left in projecting ashlar bay at base of external
stack has frieze and moulded stone cornice over, external
stack with flanking carved console brackets above has flush
quoins to left and right angles. Eaves cornice returned in
stone; false flank wall above cornice with carved bracket over
eaves to right side and frieze and moulded stone cornice has
keyed oculus with plastic sign in place of former painted
inscription now reading: POWELL'S SCHOOL HOUSE/ IN WHICH WERE
ESTABLISHED/ THE BLUE SCHOOL 1714/ THE YELLOW SCHOOL 1722/
AMALGAMATED AS/ POWELL'S SCHOOL 1876.
Gabled brick wing with sprocketed eaves to rear has two
2-light timber mullion-and-transom windows to each of first
and ground floors in plain reveals with brick flat-arch
lintels with stone keystones and stone cills; round-headed
window in gable with 2-light leaded casement has flat
unmoulded stone surround with keystone and rusticated blocks
to short vertical sides, projecting stone cill; band courses
over ground and first floors, flush quoins to left and right
angles.
C20 lean-to addition to rear left in reconstituted stone with
clay tile roof houses new staircase.
INTERIOR has C20 alterations; panelled shutters to ground
floor front windows, moulded stone fireplace with Tudor-arched
opening to first floor front left; C20 staircase from ground
to first floor, C19 stick baluster staircase from first floor
to attic. Parts of butt-purlin roof structure visible in
attic.
