GV II*
House, now public house. Probably early C17. Squared flint, limestone quoins and Ham Hill stone dressings; plain tile roof with crested ridge and brick stacks, except a stone one to left gable end; stepped stone copings to gable ends. Double-depth plan with rear right wing making L-plan. 2 storeys, 3-window range. C20 door off-centre to right with 4-light stone mullioned windows under hoodmould to right and similar 5-light window above, set in a probably C19 Ham Hill stone forward-facing gable; small 2-light stone mullioned window to 1st floor centre. To the left is a 2-storey canted bay, probably C19; ground floor has fixed C20 three-light window in painted wood frame with Tudor-style arches and coloured leaded lights. First floor of bay has 5-light stone mullioned window under a Ham Hill stone forward-facing gable with moulded kneelers. 1st floor windows were probably reset at the time of re-roofing in the late C19. Rear extension, of limestone rubble, has a 4-light stone mullioned window in gable at 1st floor level; and part of a hoodmould over C20 ground floor casement window. INTERIOR: chamfered beams to ground floor; plasterwork to first floor now cased in, not seen. Similar features, such as the porch, to Waterloo House and Manor Court, Fore Street (qv) and to Chard School, Fore Street, suggest an early C17 or even late C16 date.
