SO89NE CASTLECROFT GARDENS 895-1/4/66 (North side) No.3 The Buttery
II
House. Late C16; dismantled and re-erected on present site, 1938-9. Timber frame on brick plinth; tile roof with brick cross-axial stack. Right-angle plan, gable facing. 2 storeys with attic. Close-studded framing with jettied gable on ovolo-moulded bressummer; 2 concave lozenges below 1st floor window are painted. Windows have leaded casements with iron opening lights; 1st floor has canted oriel; small window to attic; large plaster panel, probably originally entrance, to left of window. Returns have square-panelled framing; left return has plaster ground floor and entrance; windows have leaded glazing. Rear similar; C20 single-storey kitchen addition. INTERIOR has some stop-chamfered beams, and C20 fireplaces of C17 brick. Originally stood in the centre of Shifnal and removed for road widening. A particularly good example of the work of Major Hutchinson-Smith, who built Castlecroft Gardens using much salvaged material from demolished timber-framed buildings.
