SO8932 BARTON STREET 859-1/6/63 (South side) No.71

GV II

Small house in row, now commercial premises and storage. Rebuilt C19 street front on earlier fabric, probably C17. Brick front, probably faced to timber-framing, tile roof, brick stack. Small 2-bay plan, parallel to street with side-entry and C19 rear outshot: a high parapet conceals a small section of roof dropping to a central gutter, then a steep-pitched roof which sweeps down to a low eaves at the rear, with a coped gable adjacent to No.72 (qv). 2 storeys, one-windowed. A plain square light at first floor has a concrete lintel. At ground floor is a square C19 display window, and, to the left, a part-glazed C19 door under a small transom-light. The ground-floor brickwork, up to the cill level of the upper window, has been painted. A stone string in billet-form has a high blocking course to the concrete-coped parapet. At the rear is a C18 or C19 raking 2-light dormer. Possibly part of a pair of dwellings with No.70 (qv) adjoining, but it has undergone complete restructuring to the front, and is now only partly in use. INTERIOR not inspected, but probably contains some early framing. An interesting example of a smaller-scale C17 urban property.
