Details

SK 32 NE PARISH OF MELBOURNE TRENT LANE, KINGS 3/169 NEWTON (North Side) Railway Bridge over the River Trent II Railway bridge. 1867. Cast iron with wooden decking, and rock faced stone. Wide cast iron bridge on six rows of supports with stone abutments to either end. The rows of supports are made up of five columns with bracketed tops, those to outside with bracketed tops lower and supporting pierced braces with central roundels to either side and a central pier with an attached half column. Inner columns carry riveted plate girders whilst outer columns have a raised and fielded panel over the half column and lattice work girders to either side. Wooden decking to top and pierced parapets to sides with panels to base and plain piers. Part of the Derby to Ashby line, opened in 1867, principally to provide a rail link to transport milk and vegetables to London.
