GV II

Pair of attached houses. c1847. By Charles Underwood. Render with limestone dressings, party wall stacks and a slate hipped roof. Double-depth plan. Neoclassical style. Each of 4 storeys, attic and basement; 2-window range. Near-symmetrical entrance front has shallow projecting wings with clasping pilaster strips to a deep frieze band, and boxed overhanging eaves. The wings have ground-floor pilasters to a moulded band linking them with single-storey porches, that to No.32 set back and carried across to No.31 (qv), with plate-glass overlights and 6-panel doors. No.33 has a 3/6-pane sash to the right of the doorway; upper windows have architraves to 6/6-pane sashes, and 3/6-panes to the third floor; dormer to No.32. Rear elevation has 2 wide raised sections in which the windows are set, banded to an ashlar ground floor, with a string below the eaves. Tripartite ground-floor windows with pilaster jambs and entablature, with 6/6-pane sashes, architraves on the first floor, and raised surrounds and cornices on the second floor, with a band above the cill. Two C20 dormers. First-floor balconies have moulded cast-iron railings and brackets. INTERIOR not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached front basement area spear-headed cast-iron railings; No.33 has a wrought-iron lamp attached to the outer corner by the doorway. Part of a quasi-terrace of 4 semi-detached pairs intermediate between the composed terrace of Nos 8-25 (qv), and the detached pairs of the W side of the square, all by Underwood.
