House, formerly a farmhouse. Circa late C16 or earlier origins, remodelled in the mid/late C17, substantial late C20 renovations. Local flint rubble with brick quoins at the left end, cob to the rear; thatched roof with a plain ridge, hipped at the right end, gabled at the left end; axial stack, rear lateral stack. Plan: Approximate U plan. A single depth west-facing range, fronting the road with 2 rear wings at right angles. The rear left (north-east) wing is the earliest dateable part of the house and appears to contain the remains of a through passage plan house of the circa late C16/early C17 on a west/east axis, the rear wing perhaps being the lower end, the rear left lateral stack in the main range perhaps the old hall stack, backing on to the passage. Late C20 alterations to the main range have included changes to the partitions, but circa late C17 carpentry survives in the southernmost room. The south-east wing may be a slightly later addition; lean-to between rear wings. Exterior: 2 storeys. Almost symmetrical 4 bay front, the centre slightly broken forward with a gabled porch with a circa early C19 front door with fielded panels. Fenestration of 2-, 3- and 4-light small-pane timber casements. Interior: Entrance into a stair hall, stair turned round in the late C20, north side partition altered. The room to the right has a probable C18 panelled door, a chamfered axial beam with bar scroll stops and an open fireplace with a chamfered lintel. The room to the left of the entrance is large, the fireplace (probably the hall fireplace of the earlier through passage range) has a chamfered lintel. The room has been entirely lined with C18 panelling originating from a house in Honiton and re-sited at Westgate in the last 15 years. The north-east wing is open to the collar level of the jointed cruck roof truss. The headbeam of the plank and muntin screen survives, parallel with the east wall of the main range with a good doorframe at the north end - presumably this was the through passage. The south east wing is heated from a fireplace in the axial stack. Re-sited features include a mullioned window, formerly on the first floor of the main range at the rear, and a chamfered doorframe with a C17 door overlooking the stair well.
