7/137 Hartford Barton - II

House, formerly a coaching inn, the Nags Head. Probably late C17 in origin with C18 and early C19 alterations, C20 renovations. Cob and stone rubble, whitewashed and rendered to the front elevation; slate roof, hipped at ends (formerly thatched), rear lateral stack to main range, axial stack to right of centre. Plan: L plan: A south-facing main range, 3 rooms wide with an integral outshut and a through passage which includes an C18 stair; rear left wing at right angles. To the right, an early C19 parlour with an unheated service room at the extreme right with only external access on the ground floor. To the left, the former tap room, heated from the rear lateral stack with a kitchen in the outshut behind, heated from the same stack. At the extreme left end an unheated service room. The rear left wing was a dairy or larder with a loft over. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with a gabled C19 porch to the through passage with a C19 front door, flanked by C20 timber casements with glazing bars. Ground floor window left and the 4 first floor windows are C19 2-light casements with glazing bars. On the left return a first floor C18 2-light casement with square leaded panes. The rear elevation has 2 C20 roof dormers. Interior: The through passage has slate paving. The C18 stair has turned balusters, a closed string and a flat-topped handrail. The room to the left has a chamfered crossbeam with a scroll nick stops at the south end only, an open fireplace of handmade brick with an iron lintel and stud partition walls with brick infill. The left hand room has an axial cross beam with jewel step stops. The C19 parlour has a timber chimney-piece with a dentil frieze to the cornice. The kitchen in the rear outshut has a fireplace with a bread oven and what may be a proving cupboard in the wall. Roof: Not seen at time of survey (1988) but said to be 'A' frame construction.
