2. The Bishop of Rochester had a manor house here since the time of Gundulph or earlier. This was rebuilt by Bishop Gilbert de Glanville in 1184 and altered and added to at various later dates. The old building was demolished by Bishop John Thomas and entirely rebuilt in 1774-6. It was occupied by the Bishop of Rochester until 1845 when it was sold by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. 2 storeys and attic. 9 windows. 8 modern dormers. Red brick. Painted stringcourse. Wooden modillion eaves cornice. Tiled roof. Glazing bars missing. The 3 central window bays project with a pediment over containing the date 1775 and a cartouche of the arms of Bishop Thomas. Porch with Doric columns, curved pediment and shell in the tympanum. Modern wings added on each side by the College. The colonnaded verandah on the south front was added by Coles Child after 1845 when the building became a private house.
