6/23 Barn to the North of the Ashes at NGR 469970

G.V. II

Said to have been gatehouse incorporating Catholic chapel. Now barn. Plaque with initials and date P over North door, initials and date 1737 RP on roof RI 1737 truss, but main building probably earlier. Stone rubble walls with plinth on North; graduated greenslate roof; stone ridge; ball finial on East gable. L-shaped. 5 bays. Cart entrances from each side with segmental heads, stone voussoirs and slate drips. South entrance, now blocked, originally opened into sunken area now filled in. North entrance has C19 board doors; small window to left; to right: 2 windows, one with stone voussoirs, keystone and slate drip alternating with 2 small blocked openings. Loft entrance above with large voussoirs, slate drip and boarded door. Roof has collar-trusses and 2 levels of purlins. C20 single storey lean-to to timber car-port with plastic sheet roof on south not of interest.
