Details
SK 38/3925 PARISH OF MELBOURNE CHURCH CLOSE 6/62 (East Side) 10.11.67 Muniment Room in Melbourne Hall Garden GV I Dovecot or garden pavilion, now muniment room. Early C17, remodelled in 1709. Rubble stone with ashlar quoins, plain band between storeys and moulded cornice. Octagonal bell shaped domed slate roof with lead flashings and a ball finial to top, plus small brick side wall stack to north-east side. One storey with basement and octagonal in plan. South-east side has steps down to a C17 four-centred arched door into basement. Above is a large glazing bar sash in raised plain surround with keystone. Similar window to east side, and to west side there are steps up to a plain raised doorcase with keystone and panelled door. All these C18 openings break through the original C17 plain band. Other sides blank. Remodelling coincided with the laying out of the early C18 gardens designed by Royal Gardeners to Queen Anne, London and Wise, for Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall. Work carried out by William Cook of Walcot. Included in the Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade I. See item 6/63 for sources.
