Lemprice Farmhouse
GV
II
House, formerly farmhouse. Probably C18, modernised in mid C19. Plastered cob on
stone rubble footings; stone rubble or brick stacks topped with C19 brick; slate
roof (probably thatch originally).
4-room plan house facing north. Central 2-storey porch and lobby entrance onto side
of massive axial stack serving back-to-back fireplaces. The rooms either side are
the main rooms and that to left (east) is the kitchen. Small left end room is the
larder and also includes a stair. Parlour to right and smaller end room with end
stack and another stair. On the first floor there is a corridor along the front
passing through the porch room and connecting the 2 stairs. 2 storeys. Secondary
outshot rear of the kitchen.
Symmetrical 2:1:2 window front of C19 2-light casements with glazing bars, except
the ground floor left end window which is similar but not glazed since it serves the
larder. The doorway contains a part-glazed C19 4-panel door. The porch too
appears to be C19. The timber posts have chamfered edges with C17-style scroll
stops, moulded caps and low segmental arches between. The plain deep eaves are
carried round the porch which has a hipped roof. The main roof too is hipped each
end. Rear has a 4-window front of casements similar to those on the front and the
parlour end breaks forward slightly.
Interior shows only mid C19 detail and has been very little altered since. Both
stairs are plain straight flights and the fireplaces are blocked by C20 grates. The
enormous size of the kitchen fireplace can nevertheless be appreciated. Its oven has
been converted to a cupboard. The only exposed beam is in the kitchen and has a
