TL 3811 STANSTEAD ABBOTS ROYDON ROAD (south side) Stanstead Abbots village 13/28 New House malting and No 3 malting at The Maltings down the yard S of The Mill

GV II

Maltings converted to flatted factories. Late C18 or early C19, and taller E range for French and Jupp in late C19. Yellow stock brick, white weatherboarding on timber-framing, slate roofs. 2 parallel malting ranges linked by bridges. Older W range (No 3 Malting) said to be 1774 but early C19 appearance. 11-bay, 3- storeys buttressed brick range with 2-storeys weatherboarded part raised on a brick ground floor, at N end, and a higher brick kiln with ridge cowl at S end. Small windows with segmental arches in each bay. Timber beams and cast iron columns inside. Higher E range (New House Malting) said to be 1896. 3-storeys, 9-bays, heavily buttressed middle part with small windows with lighter yellow segmental gauged arches. This range rises to 5-storeys at N with roof ridge E-W, and there is a large square kiln of equal height and with pyramid roof attached at N. 2 tall kilns with ridge cowls at S end.
