Details

SY 09 SE NEWTON POPPLEFORD HARPFORD AND HARPFORD 4/65 Otter House - 6.4.81 GV II House. Early C19. Plastered stone rubble or brick; probably brick stacks topped with C19 brick; slate roof. The house faces west. It has a double-depth plan with 3 rooms front and back. The entrance hall and stair are right (south) of centre. Massive axial stack between the centre and left rooms. 2 storeys with attics. Regular but not symmetrical 3-window front is mostly original. All 3 ground floor windows and the middle first floor window are 3-light casements with glazing bars which include a top tier of pointed arches. The outer first floor windows are shorter and plainer with glazing bars. The doorway is set right of centre and contains a part-glazed panelled door, a narrow overlight, panelled reveals and a doorcase with Tuscan pilasters and moulded entablature including a dentil cornice. The plaster front is lightly scored as ashlar. Above is the deep projecting eaves carried on widely-spaced pairs of shaped brackets. The roof is unusually tall and gable-ended to right and half-hipped to left. It contains a C20 skylight left of centre. The other windows are C19 and C20 casements most with glazing bars and one, in the left end wall, with panes of leaded glass. Interior contains a good deal of original detail.
