Gatehouse to HM Borstal, now not used as entry. Dated 1848.
Rough squared and coursed stone, dressed quoins with pecked
centre and drafted edges, ashlar window and other dressings,
roof not visible behind parapets. A plain cubic block with
centre section containing elliptical- arched opening to
alternating voussoirs on moulded caps to responds; bay to each
side in 2 storeys, each with a small window above a larger in
plat band surrounds to segmental heads and heavy cills, 8-pane
above 16-pane sashes plus external iron bars. Plain plinth,
ovolo-mould cornice with high parapet to plain coping. Above
centre a raised blocking and scrolled pediment carrying high
relief modelled Royal Arms and date. Set back within arch is a
pair of flush panel doors to segmental head and voussoirs as
outer arch. Set to left inside arch is Portland stone moulded
podium containing a VR pillar box. Built to serve the former
Portland Prison.
