The Elms and attached walls, piers,
railings and gates
GV II
House. Early C18, altered early C19.
MATERIALS: smooth squared and coursed limestone with Ham Hill
stone cornice, parapet, rusticated quoins, moulded architraves
with keystones, doorcase and plinth. Slate roof with brick
stacks to gable ends.
PLAN: 2-unit through-passage plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; symmetrical 3-window range. All windows
are early C19 8/8 sashes except those to the basement which
are 3-light stone mullioned. Curved railings and steps sweep
up to the 6-panel door, which is set in a Tuscan-style
door-case with pediment.
INTERIOR: the central stairhall has large stone slabs spanning
the width; to the rear right of it is an oak, open-well,
open-string staircase with a turned newel, swept rail and
coved plaster back to each tread. Architraves are early C18
and some original 6-panel doors remain. A fireplace to the
first-floor right has an early C18 wooden architrave with a
richly moulded cornice; the landing has wide oak floorboards,
otherwise the interior is of early C19 character with enriched
reeded cornices, elliptical arches to the hall and right-hand
rooms and reeded moulding on the panels of most doors.
The roof structure has 2 sets of main rafters, suggesting that
the roof has been raised and outer walls rebuilt; it has 7
bays, the outer ones are trenched and wedged, and the common
rafters are jointed over the purlins.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: piers with moulded cornices and pyramidal
caps flank a coursed limestone rubble wall which supports
pointed railings with a double gate at the centre and a single
one to the right; these have long/short railings. Approx 40m
of high rubblestone wall to the left encloses the garden.
