Terrace of 13 houses. c1840. Limestone ashlar, party wall stacks and pantile double-pile roof. Double-depth plan. Each of 3 storeys, basement and attic; 2-window range. A formal terrace with projecting end and 3 central houses, the right-hand pair now demolished. Rusticated ground-floor to a plat band, second-floor sill band, bracketed cornice and coped attic. Steps up to right-hand doorways have recessed jambs, imposts with guttae and brackets above, plate-glass overlights and 6-panel doors. Tripartite ground-floor windows have 2/2-pane sashes, architraves to upper windows with 6/6-pane sashes, and 3/3-panes in the attic; No.47 has 2 ground-floor sashes. A full-width tented slate balcony on cast-iron brackets with Greek Revival decoration. At the left end is a 2-storey block containing a doorway with fat Greek Doric columns to an entablature, central side 10/10-pane sash flanked by blind windows, and a first-floor with 3/4 Ionic columns on pedestals to a tripartite front window and three 8/8-pane side sashes. INTERIOR: elliptical hall arch and side dogleg stair, shutters and panelled doors. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached front area railings. A late formal terrace which shares decorative details with Melrose Place (qv). (Gomme A, Jenner M and Little B: Bristol, An Architectural History: Bristol: 1979-: 254).
