Pair of attached houses. c1847. By Charles Underwood, finished by WB Gingell. Render with limestone dressings, party wall stacks and slate and pantile mansard roof. Double-depth plan. Neoclassical style. Each of 3 storeys, basement and attic; 2-window range. A symmetrical front has shallow projecting wings, deep cornice and parapet, linked to single-storey outer porches by a deep moulded band which carries on to the neighbouring pairs. Segmental-arched doorways with raised surrounds, plate-glass overlights and 2-panel doors. Raised window surrounds with sill blocks and small ears, tripartite inner ground-floor windows, to 4/4-pane sashes, and 2/2-pane sashes with margin panes to the second floor. No.28 has a first-floor tented balcony to the inner window with cast-iron decorative railings and Vitruvian scroll, and a full-height extension set back over the porch. Rear elevation has a 5-window range, of first-floor semicircular-arched windows with raised, keyed surrounds, tripartite outer and single central windows with 2/2-pane sashes, each with a first-floor cast-iron balcony with diagonal railings and Vitruvian scroll; upper windows have raised, eared surrounds and 6/6-pane sashes. INTERIOR not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached front basement area spear-headed cast-iron railings. HISTORICAL NOTE: finished by Gingell after the original speculator was made bankrupt. Part of quasi-terrace of 4 linked semi-detached pairs, intermediate between the composed terrace of Nos 8-25 (qv), and the separate pairs along the W side of the square, all by Underwood.
