Sarcophagus, plinth and railings. c1860. To Thomas Gadd Matthews, oil and indigo merchant and dry salter. Carrara marble, Forest of Dean sandstone ashlar and cast-iron. A large plinth with concave sides and angle console buttresses, has inscribed sunken panels with foliate surrounds; on top is a large sarcophagus with lion feet, gadrooned top and acroterion finial. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: iron railings to surrounding area with 10 battered piers on Pennant plinths. HISTORICAL NOTE: original planting included yews to each corner and box hedges along the railings. The original cost was »1000. The tomb was built in both the Anglican and nonconformist sections of the cemetery to enable TG Matthews to be buried in the Anglican section and his wife in the nonconformist part; the original dividing path was diverted to accommodate this arrangement. His obituary is recorded in the Bristol Times, June 1860.
