GV II

Monument to Sarah Lees. c1938. White ashlar and bronze. Tall pylon with crosses in relief on each side rising from hexagonal plinth itself carried on circular base set in centre of raised flower bed with low stone retaining wall incorporating drinking fountains now mutilated at cardinal points. Circular base carries low relief bronzes, depicting signs of zodiac, and figures emblematic of seasons together with bust of Sarah Lees and inscription plate also low relief bronzes on hexagon above. Erected to the memory of Sarah Lees by the townspeople of Oldham. Sarah Lees was a leading local philanthropist and public figure, the first woman on Oldham town council in 1907, and mayor in 1910. On her death in 1935, she left her former home of Werneth Park to the town. (Lancashire Life: E.L.Briggs: Sarah's Reaching Hands: 1984-: 41).
