GV II
House in row. C15 with C20 alterations. Square panel framing with plaster infill, tile roof, brick stacks. PLAN: L-plan of hall and solar type with parallel-plan front range. The ground floor has been completely cleared for C20 commercial premises, and there are flat-roofed additions to the back, but the original 2-room layout remains on 2 upper floors, with a corner staircase and room beyond forming an L-plan. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic, 4-windowed. Refenestrated late C19: 2 lofty gabled dormers with framing and 3-light casements with transom, broad barge-boards, above four 2-light casements with transom, all with chamfered wood mullions, and raised surrounds. The ground floor has a 1991 shop front in sympathetic C19 style, replacing a very unsuitable plate-glass frontage. The ridge of the rear wing is just visible above the main ridge, right. INTERIOR: retains substantial original timbering, with heavy braced square-framed party walls, and in the first-floor room to the left, a 4-compartment ceiling with chamfered beams. Fine C17 dogleg stair with square newel posts, heavy moulded handrail, and twisted balusters; the stair runs through both floors, but has been cut off between ground and first floors in the recent alterations. The attics also have framed gables, and large cambered tie-beams at floor level. One wind brace remains in the back slope of the roof, with a corresponding mortice in the opposite principal. The upper half-landing has remains of a large corner post, and the back wing retains some framing. This is an important building in a group which has been substantially rebuilt on either side; the recent renovation has been achieved with care, respecting the scale of surrounding properties in new work.
