Primary school. Built 1911-12 by Joseph H. Hirst, City Architect,
with mid and late C20 alterations. Red
brick with ashlar dressings and hipped and gabled slate roofs.
Early C18 style. Two and three storeys; 10x10 windows. Square plan
with central reces to north and south sides. Windows are
mainly glazing bar sashes, those to the first floor with
moulded lintels and keystones.
West front, to playground, has polychrome quoins, moulded
first-floor sill band, and dentillated cornice. Two storeys;
10-window range. In the centre, six 28-pane sashes and below, six
similar windows with plain lintels. Slightly projecting end
pavilions have large dentillated semicircular pediments
containing a round window and festoons. Left pavilion has a
28-pane sash above and a 16-pane fixed light below. Right
pavilion has three 28-pane sashes on each floor.
Left return, to north, has a central recess with a
segment-headed tripartite glazing bar sash with hoodmould and
keystone, flanked by single 18-pane sashes. Above again, a
gable with a round louvred opening with festoons. Below, a
tripartite sash flanked by 18-pane sashes, and a full-width
flat-roofed projection with three segment-headed barred windows.
To right, end pavilion with three 28-pane sashes on each
floor. To left, hipped range with side wall stack and without
quoins. Four 28-pane sashes and below, to right, a moulded
round-arched entrance with keystone. Over the entrance,
between floors, three round windows.
Similar right return, to south, has a late C20 single-storey
flat-roofed addition fronting the centre and the left
pavilion. Left pavilion has, to right, a 24-pane sash on each
floor. Right wing has three 28-pane sashes on each floor.
