BINGLEY
HARDEN ROAD (north side)
Ferrands Stone, approximately 15 metres east of Wood Side House
II
Boundary stone. Dated 1713. Vertical stone slab with arched head built into rubble stone wall. The arched head is decoratively engraved with the Ferrand crest, a cubit arm wielding a battle-axe. Set under is the inscription with good lettering:
"The Soil and Ground of the way Leading from hence to Bingley Bridge belongs to Benjn. Ferrand Esqr. 1713"
It marks the boundary of the St. Ives estate (q q.v.). The crest relates to an incident during the Crusades of 1190 at the Siege of Acre : a Knight named Ferrand, fighting with a battle-axe after a furious engagement was left for dead by the Saracens. By night time he rallied and returned to his lines his face cut to shreds and covered in blood. (Popular legend).
