House. Circa 1660 with later additions and alterations. Uncoursed limestone
rubble with ashlar dressings; stone slate roof with moulded coped verges. 3
storeys and attic. 3 steeply-pitched gables to front, right projecting and
housing staircase. Flat-faced chamfered mullion windows with dripstones
throughout, of 4 lights to ground and first floor of left gable and of 3 lights
to second floor. Centre gable has 3-light window to ground floor and 2-light
windows to first and second floors. Oval-shaped window to attic in moulded
rectangular surround with hollow spandrels and dripstone. Left return of right
gable has 2-light mullion window to each floor. Entrance at junction between
left and centre gables; C19 panelled door (glazed to top) in contemporary
shallow rectangular porch with blank armorial shield and embattled parapet.
External end stacks (rebuilt in C19) have dripstones and moulded capping to
ashlar shafts; similar ridge stacks between right gable and main range, former
with paved and rebated shafts. 2-storey lean-to in angle to right of right gable
has 2-light mullion window with dripstone to each floor. Low outbuilding
attached to right gable end of main range is present kitchen. This is linked to
T-shaped single-storey outbuilding with C20 three-light mullion window to front
gable and C19 triple casement with chamfered wood lintel to left return. Rear of
main range, said to be original front of building, is symmetrical with 3 gables
and mullion windows like those to front on each floor, all of 3 lights except
for 4-light windows to ground and first floors of right gable. Oval-shaped
windows like that to front to attic. Boarded door to far left. Interior.
Left ground floor room has chamfered spine beam and late C19/early C20
square and rectangular panelling, possibly reusing some earlier pieces.
Stone fireplace to left mainly early C20 but parts of jambs may be C17.
Infilled fireplaces to large chimney breast facing entrance, room to
right of which has chamfered ceiling beam and fireplace with probably
C18 moulded stone surround. Right room of main range has stone-flag
floor and chamfered spine beam with stepped ogee stops. Wide winder
staircase in projecting gable leads to attic. First floor: right room of main
range has moulded stone fireplace; chamfered ceiling beams throughout and to
second floor. Double-purlin roof in 3 unequal bays has steep-pitched chamfered
principal rafters with yokes rising from tie beams at level of lower purlins,
outbuilding (present kitchen) attached to right gable end of main range has
double-purlin roof with central collar and tie beam truss: deep-chamfered cross
beam with slots for removed joists visible. T-shaped outbuilding (now converted
to domestic accommodation) has cambered tie beam exposed.
