DEBENHAM TM 16 SE 4/39 Roamwood Green Farmhouse - - II

Farmhouse. Early C17. North cross-wing added c.1980. Timber framed, mainly plastered, part of the rear roughcast-rendered. Plaintiled roof: old clay tiles to the front and concrete tiles to the rear. 3-cell form. 2 storeys and attic. 3 windows, C19 tripartite sashes with glazing bars under wooden hoodmoulds. To lower left is a mid C20 standard casement window. Lobby entry has mid C20 French windows and wide open-fronted brick porch. 3 mid C20 flat- roofed dormers. Stack has plain oblong shaft, the lower portion original, the remainder of C19 date with a sawtooth cap. Overhanging gables. The left gable has a moulded tie beam with evidence for a projecting first floor window; 2 original drop-finials and one replacement. Right gable has one original drop-finial to rear, the remainder obscured by the c.1980 addition. Interior. Some plain studding exposed on upper floor. The studding in the parlour is of mid C20 date. Chamfered joists at service end (originally divided axially into two) and in cross-passage. Service partition removed. 3 rooms have plaster ceilings with bolection-moulded cornices, each sub-divided by an encased axial floorbeam: this is probably work of c.1700. Newel post of first floor stair has knob finial. Clasped purlin roof with 2-way arched wind-bracing.
