WANTAGE NEWBURY STREET SU3987 (West side) 7/146 Nos. 1 to 8 (consecutive), 22/04/50 Stiles Court (Formerly listed as Style's Almshouses Nos. 1 to 12 (consecutive))

GV II

Almshouses. Built 1680 for Robert Stile. Flemish bond brick with flared headers; C20 tile roof; brick stacks. Courtyard plan. One storey and attic; 5-bay range. Central projecting bay has semi-circular arch with decorative keystone over C20 door; segmental pedimented datestone reads "The Gift of/ Mr Robert Stile/ of Amsterdam/ Merchant who/ died October/ Y 3rd Anno Domini/ 1680". Gauged brick flat arches over 2-light leaded casements with shutters. Chamfered plinth; gauged brick moulded cornice; C20 hipped dormers. Hipped roof. Ridge stacks. 3-window range left side wall has gauged brick flat arches over C20 casements. Similar detailing to 5-window range rear wall, with moulded wood architrave to central doorway.
