7/14 The Golden Ball
GV II
House, latterly inn, now house. Late C17, extended mid-to late C18 with later
additions and alterations. Roughly coursed limestone rubble; machine tile roofs.
Central through-passage plan with contemporary low twin-gabled range to rear;
C18 addition to left. 2 storeys and attic. C20 casements with wood lintels on
each floor to either side of prominent gabled porch with C20 casement to front;
outline of earlier higher gabled porch, probably housing 2 doorways (one on site
of present entrance), above and to left. 2 small gabled dormers in middle of
roof slope. Integral end stacks with dripstones. C18 addition to left has C20
casement with wood lintel on each floor. Interior. Left ground-floor room has
chamfered spine beam and inglenook fireplace with C20 wood lintel. Panelled door
to right with H-hinges leads to oak winder staircase. Right room has chamfered
spine beam with stepped ogee stops and inglenook fireplace with stepped
ogee-stepped chamfered wood lintel. Plank door to left with strap hinges leads
to winder staircase. Evidence in ceiling for former right wall of through
passage running to doorway in twin-gabled range to rear. C18 extension has inset
panelled wall cupboards to either side of infilled fireplace and plank door
leading to former outbuilding in back wall. First floor of main range has
chamfered spine beams, that to left room with mortices for former partition
beneath. Oak winder staircase to left continues through plank door to attic;
carved newel. Double-purlin roof in 4 bays with outer collar trusses, right
composed of reused timbers, and central stone wall. Single-purlin roofs to short
twin-gabled range to rear, right with collar.
