BEDFIFLD Tlf 26 NW 2/15 Tavern Farmhouse - - II

House, latterly public house (closed 1962). Early-mid C17, in 2 phases. Main range extended slightly to right in C19. Timber framed and roughcast- rendered, thatched roof. A 2-storey 2-cell main range with later 1 1/2-storey wing set forward to left. Mid C20 small-paned metal casements. In the angle of the 2 ranges is a mid C20 curved porch, fully enclosed, with glazed door and windows to each side. Main range has end chimney at junction with later wing: this has a C19 red brick shaft. C19 gable stack to right of main range. Interior. Modernised. Exposed studding with reverse-curved braces; evidence for diamond-mullioned upper windows. Plain joists, set flat but not heavy, in 2 ground floor rooms (one in each section). Clasped purlin roofs over both sections; a few re-used sooted rafters.
