Corn exchange converted into picture gallery c.1890, now shopping arcade and
offices. Mid C19. Limestone ashlar ground floor; Flemish bond yellow brick with
red brick quoins and dressings; old tile roof. 3 storeys; 4-window range. Ground
floor of c.1890 divided into 2 bays by pilasters with grey limestone composite
capitals; ovolo-moulded segmental-arched entry to left; plain frieze has
"VICTORIA CROSS GALLERY" in capital letters flanked by panelled strips. Gauged
brick segmental arches with flush keystones to late C19 horned sashes. Red brick
string course. Dentilled cornice. Gabled roof with crested ridge tiles; gable
end stack to right. Interior not inspected. Formerly the Corn Exchange,
converted c.1890 into the Victoria Cross Gallery by Colonel Sir Robert
Loyd-Lindsay V.C. (Lord Wantage) to house pictures of Victoria Cross heroes by
Claudier Desanges. Included for group value.
