SOUTH ELMHAM ST. JAMES THE STREET TM 38 SW

4/57 The Thatched Cottage -

- II

House. C17. 1½ storeys. Timber-framed and rendered with thatched roof. 3 3-light late C20 diamond-leaded casement windows to each storey. Plank door under an open thatched and gabled porch. An internal chimney-stack with a plain red brick shaft, and one end stack. The frame is in 6 bays, including a chimney-bay, probably with a basic 3-cell division, but to the left of the stack there is now a single large room, with the ceiling beams either an insertion or replacement. The main posts have no tie-beams, and some of the timbers are reused. To the right of the stack, the main beam on the ground floor has ovolo-moulding and ogee stops; the remaining beams are chamfered, with plain joists set flat. A single-storey lean-to along the rear.
