CHASTLETON SP22NW 3/25 Dovecote approx. l30m SE of Chastleton House 27.8.57 (Formerly listed as Dovecote at Chastleton House)
GV II*
Dovecote. Dated 1762 for Thomas Fothergill. Regularly coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, piers and alternating angle quoins carried up to gables; stone slate roof with coped verges and carved apexes. Square plan with 4 gables supported on segmental arches with voussoirs, projecting keystones and plain impost bands. Rounded to apex of each gable, blind to north-east and south-west sides and lead water spouts to corners. Open octagonal cupola to centre has lead cap with ball finial. Inscription "THOMAS/FOTHERGILL/Esq./JUNE EY 2/1762 on keystone of north-west arch. Interior. Loft supported on plain beam and joists has trap door, pigeon nesting holes and ledges. Double butt-purlin roof in 2 bays has central truss with V-struts from tie beam to principal rafters. (Buildings of England: Oxfordshire: p533) [2466]
