Details
CORSHAM HIGH STREET ST 8770 (west side) 5/217 Town Hall (formerly listed as Methuen Hall) 20.12.60 GV II
Town Hall, 1882 by W.H. Bromley of Corsham, reusing ground floor, cornice and pediment stonework from 1784 Market Hall. Ashlar with slate roof, coped gables and end wall stacks. Original building was single storey, centre projecting, 1-3-1 arrangement of large arches with impost band and keystones rising to upper band, blank attic over and moulded cornice, parapet and central pediment with Methuen arms. As rebuilt, ground floor is similar but with arched-headed glazing bar sashes recessed in original arches and central arched-headed doorway with double doors and fanlight set in heavy surround of clustered pilasters supporting brackets to balustraded balcony, centre altered for 1897 relief portrait of Queen Victoria in arched frame. Original upper band now sill course to upper recessed arched-headed glazing bar sashes with impost band and keystones. Cornice, parapet and pediment to centre with reused carved arms and carved date 1784 to left; carved date 1882 to right. South return has arched ground floor recess with blocked 2-light window and one upper window similar to main front. North side and rear are of small ashlar block, entirely 1882. (C.J.
