CORNBURY AND WYCHWOOD CORNBURY PARK SP3518 13/18 Icehouse approx. 460m SE of Cornbury House
- II
Icehouse. Probably c18, Coursed limestone rubble. Circular plan with domed roof. Double skin below ground level. Entrance to north with corbelled stone roof and boarded door with wrought-iron strap hinges and flat stone arch. Interior: domed chamber. Some brick in dome. The double-skin construction is unusual and was probably employed to improve the thermal performance of the building, especially as it is not covered by an earth mound. The icehouse stands in a remote position in Cornbury Park, at some distance from Cornbury House (q.v.). (Buildings of England: Oxfordshire: pp553-5)
