TOSTOCK
NORTON ROAD
The Lodge
(Formerly listed as Old Rectory Lodge)
II
Former farmhouse, C16 in two stages. Two storeys. Three-cell lobby-entrance plan: a service range set forward to left. Timber-framed and plastered. Concrete pantiled roof, formerly plaintiled. An axial late C16/early C17 chimney of red brick. A set of four C18 casements with transomes. Mid C20 half-glazed panelled door at lobby-entrance, with C20 gabled open porch on posts.
Interior: The three-cell main range has late C16 features; a little exposed close-studding and plain chamfered main members, a wide lintelled open fireplace in the hall. The service cell to left is of early C16 and may be the original house, in whole or in part. It has good tension-braced studding, heavy unchamfered floor joists, and a beam with brattishing which may be an introduction from elsewhere. Evidence for a possible long-wall jetty, underbuilt, on the west side. Much remodelled, reroofed and the first storey used as a granary in C18/C19.
