KESSINGLAND
LONDON ROAD
No.33 (The Ark)

II

Farmhouse, latterly 3 cottages. Early C17. Timber framed and plastered with
some rope-pattern pargetting at the rear; one gable end is colourwashed brick.
Pantiled roof with double Roman tiles to the rear slope. 2 storeys and attic.
3 cell form. At first floor level are 4 original ovolo-moulded mullion and
transom windows with moulded sills: one to the front has 4 lights, 3 to the
rear have 5 lights. A further original window has been opened out and another
is visible inside. The other windows and the entrance doors are mid C20.
Internal stack with 4 flues in sawtooth pattern, entirely rebuilt mid C20;
gable end stack to left. Good interior with most of the framing exposed, but
not the joists. The hall has an ovolo-moulded bridging beam and cornice, and
retains the original square-headed entrances (blocked) to the service rooms.
The parlour and the chamber over it have ovolo-moulded cross-beamed ceilings.
Over the fireplace in the latter room is a painted text (C18?), now somewhat
indistinct, but apparently moralistic in content. Original newel stairs and
several original doors including that to the attic stair. This house is a
fine example of its type in an area where intact timber framed houses are
scarce.
