5/125 Arch Farm Cottage -
-- II
House, probably mid C17. 2 storeys. 4-cell plan. Timber-framed and plastered. Pantiled roof, the centre section with mainly glazed tiles. An axial C16/C17 chimney of red brick in 2 stages, the shaft rebuilt in C19/C20: a gable chimney of C19 to right. Mainly early C19 casements. C19 boarded entrance door. Interior: the house is mainly constructed of reused components from a mid or late C16 building which was long-wall jettied at 1st floor level and which may have stood on this site. The chimney is in 2 stages, and the narrow buff brickwork of the earlier stage may be of C16 date: the second flue of red brick is certainly C17. Back-to-back open fireplaces. A mid C16 plank-and-muntin cross passage screen is reused to partition a chamber: it has traces of C16/C17 painted decoration. Diamond-mullioned windows of C17, and evidence for others of C16 in reused timbers. Large reused C16 floor joists: smaller C17 joists at left-hand end.
