Terrace of 6 cottages. Circa 1825. Brick in Flemish bond; corrugated sheet
roofs with brick ridge-stacks. Double-depth plan. 2-storeys. 2-window fronts
with central plank doors flanked by 3-light casements at ground and first
floors under segmental arches. Roofs of 10 degrees pitch have boxed eaves. 4-
flue stack between each pair of cottages. Built to house workers from James
Swann's nearby paper mill. Roofs originally covered in tarred paper in
accordance with the ideas of J.C. Loudon as expressed in his pamphlet: "Account
of the Paper Roofs used at Tew Lodge, Oxon", 2nd edition, 1811- Mr. Swann being
mentioned in Loudon's pamphlet as being "thoroughly conversant in the business
of paper roofs". Roof trusses built exactly to Loudon's specifications. The
only former paper-roofed building erected to Loudon's specifications which is
known to survive.
