CREETING ST. PETER WILLOW GREEN TM 05 NE 4/79 Barn, 30m north-west of - 9-12-55 Roydon Hall GV II*
Barn, mid C16. 10 bays, of which the south-easternmost 3 were originally floored over and designed as stabling with a loft above (one bay was united with the barn in C18/C19). Timber-framed and weatherboarded. Plaintiled roof. Original doorways at bays 5 and 9 on the south-west side have sets of 4 C19/C20 boarded doors. Flanking these openings, and at each corner of the building, are external buttress-shafts with simple capitals, carved on the principal posts. Good quality close-studding with arched wind-braces. A fine and unusual roof of raised-aisled form, with 2 tiers of queen-posts at each truss; at the lower tier a pair of queen-posts stand upon an arch-braced tie- beam, the posts being jowled and arch-braced to straight collars and square- set purlins. All the main components are chamfered, and stopped at intersections. The complexity of the roof structure arises from the unusually wide span of the barn. The rafter feet retain original moulded sprockets. The upper floor over the stable has massive unchamfered joists and is integral with the remainder of the building.
