Details
MENDHAM WITHERSDALE ROAD TM 28 SE 2/73 Mendham Lodge (formerly - listed as Chestnut Lodge 29.7.55 Farmhouse) -- II*
Farmhouse. C16 main range; set forward towards the road a later wing with an early C17 date within a panel in the base of the stack (said to be 1601). Timber framed and plastered, partly lined in imitation of ashlar. Plaintiled roof, some sections with C20 concrete tiles. 2 storeys and attic. C18-C19 small-paned casement windows with wooden hoodmoulds above. C20 plank door. 2 mid C20 gabled dormers to later wing. In the angle of the 2 ranges is an early C17 staircase wing with carved tie beam and drop finials. The later wing has an internal stack with 5 detached circular shafts with moulded brick enrichment: the shafts have been rebuilt and the designs altered; 2 of the shafts have star caps. In the base of the stack is a sunk panel containing the date and with a moulded brick surround. Gable stack with 2 shafts in matching style but of early C20 date. Fine early C17 dog-leg stair extending to the attic: turned balusters; turned newel posts with acorn finials, one newel post with a carved rose. In the later wing an open ground floor fireplace with moulded stone jambs and wooden lintol. The first floor room at the left of the main range has complete but altered lace C16/early C17 oak panelling and a 4-centre arched fireplace. The end room of the later wing has been modernised and the first floor ceiling raised.
