CHEVERELL MAGNA CHURCH STREET ST 95 SE (south side) 5/18 Manor House 19.3.62 II House. c1690 for James Townsend I, enlarged early C18, altered later C18. English bond brickwork with tiled roofs. Two storeys and attic. 'U'-plan comprising central block with forward end wings on north, entrance side, the courtyard filled in C18 with garden wall bond, containing large stair hall and stair. To left, a formerly detached C17 dwelling, probably a curate's house separated by driveway, later built up to contain kitchen and services. Central door approached by steps, panelled, within stone surround, and timber pediment on cut brackets. Wings have 16-paned sashes with concealed boxes and gauged brick lintels with keystones. Moulded string course, extended over central infilling as plat band. Central section gabled, with stone copings and rampant lion terminals. Oval window to attic. Wings have hipped roofs. Two 3-flue brick stack with shafts joined at heads. Left building has 3-light stone-mullioned windows and is extended at angle at rear to form wing. Date on rainwater hoppers 1781. Interior: Drawing room in original centre block at rear of hall has C18 panelling, and remains of similar panelling in large parlour in right wing. Small parlour in left wing is complete with C17 oak panelling, brought from Frome and reset in early C19. Stair early C19.
