GV II
Manor house. Early/mid C18, extended late C19. Limestone rubble with ashlar dressings; ashlar; stone-slate roofs with stone and brick stacks. Double-depth plan, extended. 2 storeys plus attics and basement. Original 3-window front, with projecting full-height porch wing to right, has sashes in plain stone architraves with keyblocks and a gabled roof dormer to left. Similar sashes in double-gabled return wall to left. 3-window ashlar garden front, with storeyband, has blind windows at basement level. Large late C19 range to right of front has irregular stone-mullioned fenestration and an arched mullioned and transomed window at the front. Interior: Fine early/mid C18 open-well stair with ramped and wreathed handrails, open string with scrolled spandrel brackets and 3 turned balusters per tread; fireplace with eared architrave and heavily-carved cornice; butt-purlin roof. The former home of John Buchan, Baron Tweedsmuir, Governor-General of Canada.
