3/111 Barn at Brett Farm
II
Barn with attached outbuildings. Probably early C19. Dressed limestone, stone slate roof with coped verges on kneelers with saddlestones. Five bays, gabled porch with segmental-headed opening on north east front, lean-to attached to right with segmental-headed doorway leading down to cellar, now part of dwelling, lean-to cowshed to left of porch with planked doors and double-Roman tiled roof. Left return with lean-to cowshed, formerly open-fronted 2-bay cart shed with stone piers. Rear facing south west has segmental-headed double doors to slightly projecting centre bay, two slit vents to right. C20 addition attached to right of front, not of special interest, but unusual cellared lean-to right return with vents to basement level and C20 casements to ground floor. Cellar has three barrel-vaulted rooms, now converted to separate flat. Interior of barn has C19 king post roof trusses with V struts, square niche in wall of porch, probably for the threshing flail grease, counting scratch marks incised in wall of porch. Good example of C19 stone barn.
