3/27 George Hill House
II
House, formerly the George Inn. Early C17, with late C17/ early C18 extensions. One storey and attics: 3-cell form. Timber-framed and rendered with pantiled roof. An internal chimney-stack with 2 attached hexagonal shafts on a square base. A single-storey extension at the north end, and a later wing at the rear. 2 3-light casement windows with transomes and cross- bars to lights, and 2 2-light casement windows. Recessed 4-panel door in a plain surround. Exposed beam and joist ceilings to ground-storey rooms, and 2 back-to-back fireplaces with timber lintels. The original house was apparently 2-cell, with an end chimney-stack, extended by a third unit to the south of the stack, where there is a 3-bay room possibly associated with its use as an inn. To the north of the stack, part of the rear wall was raised, and the roof-pitch made shallower, probably in early C19. The house stands high above the road.
