FINCH LANE EC3 1 5002 (East Side) No 22 TQ 3281 SE 10/N/9

II

2. (?) 1855 by Thomas Hague (Hitchcock: C19 and C20 Architecture). Office building of painted stone and red brick. 5 bays. 4 storeys. Ground and 1st floors linked by thin stone piers rising to form tall openings with rounded angles between jambs and head; the slenderness of the piers is accentuated by a cavetto moulding continuous arcnind the angles and across the heads. Those tall openings contain recessed windows with moulded timber mullions and only a narrow transome between the 2 floors. The design is visually reminiscent of a framed structure of cast iron. Upper storeys with architraves to windows. Simple crowning cornice with egg and dart enrichment to bed mould. Return elevation to Royal Exchange Avenue of 3 bays similar to main front.
